holds a charity pancake breakfast every year to
raise money for local charities.
THE CHALLENGE
About a week before the event, Enquiro
President and CEO, Gord Hotchkiss was walking
past Senior Organic Search Marketing Strategist
Jody Nimetz's desk and facetiously said, "You
have one week to get us ranking number one for
pancake breakfast." With the good old days of
“roll up your sleeves” SEO seemingly long gone,
it appeared to be a long shot at best,
especially given the time frame.
THE SOLUTION
Jody took Gord up on the challenge. The next
day, he created and uploaded an event page and
started collecting “link love” (or stealing it,
as Gord Hotchkiss found out when he gave Jody
access to his blog!). The page was created on
June 26th and uploaded in the late afternoon.
The page was indexed in the major search engines
the next day. The first rankings in the top 100
were achieved on June 28, and the rankings just
took off from there. As of July 3rd, the page
was ranking #1 in Google for “stampede pancake
breakfast”, even outranking
stampedebreakfast.com. It maintained that
position, and even ranked #1 in Google for
“stampede breakfast 2007” by July 7.
The event’s publicity, although not
heavily dependant on Search, turned out to be a
huge success as in previous years. At the
pancake breakfast, Enquiro raised over $1,500
for the Kelowna Women’s Shelter. And Jody proved
that amazing results can be achieved through
targeted, white-hat SEO tactics.
